Adrian M.A. Williams

VE Day (8 May 2020) will resonate with everyone differently, strongly with some, others less so.

As a boy, I had no interest in history and I was completely oblivious to the impact WW2 had on my parents who lived through it. It was only much later in life that I came to realise that the emotional scars carried by my parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, were borne silently and not shared. I didn’t even think to ask about the physical scars my Grandfather bore on his body when we sunbathed on the beach in Cornwall. He was such a softly spoken, jolly, kind man. Yet he, George A. Newling MC (the Military Cross from the Battle of Gavrelle, WW1) had returned from New Zealand - where he had taken the family to set up a trading company in the 1930s – to fight once more. And also to lose his eldest son.

That was my mother’s eldest brother, Michael Alan Newling D.F.C. - one of The Few – a hurricane and spitfire pilot, he died in Channel operations on 6th July 1941. My mother was the last to see him, at the railway station. I was named after him.

We are delighted to be able to offer Pashley owners the opportunity to participate in a very special event on the 16th of June, kindly hosted by the famous Gleneagles Hotel.

The day will involve a gentle bicycle ride of around 12 miles, with a midway refreshment and photo stop at the picturesque Strathallan Castle. On return to Gleneagles there will be a delightful afternoon tea hosted in their new Strathearn Orangery, with a special accompaniment created by the Gleneagles' executive pastry chef.

There will also be the opportunity to try a range of our bicycles including the recently launched Pashley-Morgan models, along with some lovely Morgan motor cars. Fellow British bicycle maker 'Moulton' will also have bicycles on-hand for you to experience.

The day is all about enjoying the fresh air of Scotland on your Pashley bicycle, delicious food, and toasting a glass of bubbly with friends and fellow riders, all in the glorious surroundings of Gleneagles.

Tickets are £25 and include the participation in the ride, afternoon tea and refreshments, and any test-rides or test-drives:

We hope you will be able to join us.

Please note: Gleneagles has a fleet of Pashley classic bicycles for its guests to use. The hotel will offer its best available rate for attendees.

On Saturday 14th, postmen Keith Elgar, Graham Hill, Richard Wood & Luke Elgar summited the notorious Alpe d'Huez (Le Tour de France) on their 3 speed Pashley Royal Mail Bikes, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. It involved over 13km of relentless riding up to a height of 1815m. They completed the climb in just under 1:30 hours, stopping only once to refill drink bottles at ‘dutch corner’.

Keith mentioned “Our concern whilst driving up the day before to our hotel at the summit was that some sections were too steep for the 3 speed Pashley however they served us brilliantly and despite our legs screaming at us, the post bikes were more than up to the challenge. We now cannot wait to watch le Tour de France stage at Alpe d'Huez on Thursday to watch the pros follow in our pedal strokes.”

Many congratulations to the riders from all at Pashley. If you would like to support their challenge, please visit their fund raising page: Alp d'Huez Challenge

Pashley was founded in 1926 by William ‘Rath’ Pashley. In his early years he apprenticed at the Austin motor Company before serving as a despatch rider in the First World War. Although he focused on two wheeled transport at Pashley, he also developed a small range of motorised vehicles. One of these light weight vehicles, ‘The Pashley Superior’, was developed for the sale of Ice Cream! A restored original of the ‘Superior’ will be on show outside The Traditional Cycle Shop in Stratford-upon-Avon this weekend for the Stratford Festival of Motoring 2018. Feel free to pop-along and take a look.

The Pashley Team would like to thank attendees and supporters for joining us for the 2017 Pashley Picnic Ride. It was wonderful to have so many of you join us, and to see old friends but also welcome new faces. We were so pleased the weather was kind to us too.

Highlights included seeing riders assemble at the Traditional Cycle Shop in such splendid finery, followed by the sound of ding-dong bells heralding their arrival at Charlecote Park. We also enjoyed the wonderful entertainment provided by the HandleBards and The Swing Cats Trio. These and other special moments have been captured in some lovely photos taken by Pashley Picnic riders, which we have linked below.

We look forward to seeing you all again at the next Picnic Ride!
