The first of the Edinburgh Bike hire bikes, sponsored by ‘Just Eat’, were unveiled on Monday 17th, September, on the streets of Edinburgh by Mark Beaumont, ultra-endurance British cyclist, and council leader, Adam McVey. The initial offering includes 200 bikes across 19 locations in Central Edinburgh, with a three-year concession agreement that plans to deliver 1,000 bikes, including 100 e-bikes.

The bikes, designed and built by Pashley Cycles, have been given names that reference Scottish history and culture, among these Sherlock and Greyfriar. The cycles afford superior handling and ride quality, with high quality Shimano gears and brakes, comfortable gel saddle, front and rear LED lights, full length mudguards, puncture resistant tyres and a step through frame allowing ease of use for all cyclists regardless of height.

After the success of the new generation Santander Cycles in London, Pashley have once again partnered with Serco for this project working towards a new mobility solution for cities. The cycles feature an adapted gearing system to tackle the hills of Edinburgh, as well as a new, innovative hybrid lock, which allows secure ‘dockless’ parking within a virtual geo-fenced zone.
