The first of the Edinburgh Bike hire bikes, sponsored by ‘Just Eat’, were unveiled on Monday 17th, September, on the streets of Edinburgh by Mark Beaumont, ultra-endurance British cyclist, and council leader, Adam McVey. The initial offering includes 200 bikes across 19 locations in Central Edinburgh, with a three-year concession agreement that plans to deliver 1,000 bikes, including 100 e-bikes.

The bikes, designed and built by Pashley Cycles, have been given names that reference Scottish history and culture, among these Sherlock and Greyfriar. The cycles afford superior handling and ride quality, with high quality Shimano gears and brakes, comfortable gel saddle, front and rear LED lights, full length mudguards, puncture resistant tyres and a step through frame allowing ease of use for all cyclists regardless of height.

After the success of the new generation Santander Cycles in London, Pashley have once again partnered with Serco for this project working towards a new mobility solution for cities. The cycles feature an adapted gearing system to tackle the hills of Edinburgh, as well as a new, innovative hybrid lock, which allows secure ‘dockless’ parking within a virtual geo-fenced zone.

At the launch, Mark Beaumont said: “Launching Just Eat Cycles is an exciting step for Edinburgh and the people who live, visit and study here. The app is very simple to use and the bikes will allow everyone to explore our great city.”

Council leader Cllr Adam McVey said: “The launch of a city-wide cycle hire scheme marks a new era in public transport for Edinburgh and the people who work, study and visit here. Investment in cycling infrastructure has gathered pace in recent years in Edinburgh, and this affordable and accessible scheme will complement the existing transport options available to those looking to get around the Capital.”

The bikes will be available for hire through the ‘Just Eat Cycles’ app for as little as £1.50 a trip or £3 for a day pass.
